Rowing Update - LAST ONE!!

29 Aug 2016 by Christian Oneto

Dear Rowing Community,

As has been mentioned earlier I have accepted a position at the school as Dean of Boarding. Whilst I am extremely humbled and excited by this opportunity, it is also with a touch of sadness that I will step away from rowing. This community has been a family for me for the last 8 years and I have cherished many of the friendships that have been built over that time. Whilst I will be moving into a new area of the school, I will forever feel a sense connection to the rowing program. Thank you to the many families that have taken the time to contact me. It has been very humbling. I have no doubt that this program will continue to thrive with such talented and passionate parents, coaches and boys that are still driving it. Paul Brown will be acting as Rowing Director whilst the school will advertise nationally to fulfil this role; I have no doubt that the next rowing director will take Nudgee Rowing to the next level!

Pre-Season Training
A reminder that ‘on water’ training is continuing and boys in years 9-11 are encouraged to come down and starting working on their individual sculling skills. Training days are Monday, Thursday (5:20am, with bus leaving school at 5am) and Saturday 6:30am to 8:30 am (with a bus leaving school at 6am).

September Camps
A reminder that September Sculling camp in Maroochydore is vital for boys to gain much needed development in the single scull prior to the first selection trials next term (Monday Oct 3rd). Payment can be made on the Payment Gateway (this can act as permission) or forms with all the details can be downloaded from the rowing Teamapp and paid via cash/cheque to the Activities Office. If any parents can assist with this camp (which allows us to keep the cost down) please contact Alan Kirk (alan.kirk@tmpc.com.au) or Julie Warren (scentedcandlelady@gmail.com).

QLD Schools State Championships
We will be sending four year 9 boys, four year 10 boys and eight year 11 boys to Bundaberg in the first weekend of the September Holidays (these boys would therefore miss the Sculling Camp at Maroochydore). To be selected you must attend the sculling trial on the Brisbane River on Monday morning the 5th of September (If you are unable to attend you MUST come and see me prior to Monday the 5th). Any boys interested in being selected in the Met North U16 or Open Quad which will compete at the QLD Schools State Championships, the selection trials will occur on Sunday the 4th of September at our Rowing shed (you MUST register with Mr Brown by Thursday the 1st of September if you are interested) Any boy that makes one of these quads will be automatically selected to attend for Nudgee.

Parent Support Group
We have a Parent Support Group meeting on Monday September 5th at 6:30pm at the Nudgee Rowing Shed (Davies Park West End). This will be an important meeting to discuss Barralong and our September camps.

Barralong Corporate Regatta
Our major fundraiser has been another great success this year, with the rowing support group agreeing to donate $10,000 to St Francis School in Cambodia so that they can build a computer classroom for their students. I expect all Rowers to attend Sunday the 11th of September to support this fundraising initiative which will also allow us to continue buying the best boats for our rowers (the event is held from 7am – 12pm at the rowing shed at West End).

The other way you can help is by selling raffle tickets, which can be obtained from the Activities Office or on Saturday’s rugby Home game helping Mrs Barbara Mark sell them. Our aim is to sell 1000 tickets (so far we have sold 250).

Best of Luck for Season 2016 which is going to be defined by your RESILIENCE and SPIRIT!

Regards
Christian Oneto
